DESERT SPACE

In today’s Gospel, we read about John the Baptist and his preaching in the desert of Judea. Why of all places did John choose the desert to preach? Why would he and others find God in a place of silence, discomfort, extreme temperatures, and minimal resources? Perhaps these characteristics, although tough, also brought about greater space for God and spiritual growth.

It makes me reflect on where the “deserts” are in my own life - spaces that I might need, even if they are uncomfortable or inconvenient, to help me genuinely grow closer to God. Is it consistently waking up early enough to be in silent prayer each day? Or creating better boundaries to provide my body with the rest it needs when I feel fatigued? Or is it choosing to connect with my husband when I’m tired rather than sit on the couch and zone out by watching a Netflix show? Or taking the risk to have a hard conversation with a person I struggle with?

Whatever our “desert” is in our lives, may we consider being like John the Baptist and finding space for that which might be uncomfortable, yet necessary for genuine spiritual growth and go there this Advent Season so that we and God can grow closer together.

Dear God, thank you for the example of John the Baptist and all those that preach of your goodness. Help us to also prepare the way for the Lord as we make space in our hearts for Christ as we await His coming this Advent Season. May You give us the courage to do what is necessary to grow closer to You. Amen.
