GOD’S UNWAVERING PRESENCE

"I will maintain my covenant with you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting pact, to be your God and the God of your descendant after you." – Gn. 17:7

There have been times in my life when it has been difficult to see and feel Jesus. Recently though, while in prayer, I heard his voice gently say, "I have never left you." These words bring such consolation. That while there may be times when I feel distant from him, it is simply not the truth. Despite my busy-ness, distractions, ego, shortcomings, and failures, his gaze has always remained on me. His presence has never wavered. In this uncertain world, what a certainty to behold, wrestle with, and rest within.

Today, we see God's fidelity in scripture. The First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, and Gospel all nod to the upcoming resurrection where God's covenant is renewed, not even death or sin can separate us from him. Over and over again, God extends words of assurance that he is thinking of us, has made plans for us, and loves us. Not just then, but now. Not just during biblical times, but today.

One of my favorite invitations of the Lenten season is to pause. It is within this pause that it is possible to be reminded of God's repeated statements of promise. His promise wraps around us, comforting us when it is difficult to feel the presence of grace in the everyday hustle and bustle of what this world expects of us. His words are his vows, made lovingly while he beholds his beloved creations - us. Imploring us to remain hopeful and faithful.

Dear Lord, may your promises be repeated as statements of truth in my life so that I may respond in kind with love and fidelity.
